Stone Sculptor
Tendai Mutasa
Tendai Mutasa discovered his calling at the age of 12 when he began apprenticing with his uncle, a renowned sculptor in the Shona tradition. Over the past 25 years, he has developed a distinctive style that bridges ancient spiritual themes with contemporary artistic expression.
Working primarily with serpentine and verdite stones from the hills surrounding his home in Chitungwiza, Tendai spends months on each piece, allowing the stone itself to guide his chisel. His sculptures have been exhibited in galleries across Europe, North America, and Asia, and are held in private collections worldwide.
Tendai believes that each stone contains a spirit waiting to be released. His role, as he sees it, is to listen to the stone and help that spirit emerge. This philosophy infuses his work with a sense of life and movement that has made him one of Zimbabwe's most celebrated contemporary sculptors.
