Master Weaver
Sekuru Chenjerai
Sekuru Chenjerai represents the fifth generation of master weavers in his family, carrying forward techniques that have been passed down for over 150 years. Born near the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe, his work is deeply connected to the artistic traditions of that magnificent civilization.
Using locally sourced grasses, reeds, and natural dyes, Sekuru creates baskets and textile pieces that are both functional works of art and carriers of cultural meaning. Each pattern tells a story - of seasons, of family, of the land and its spirits.
At 72, Sekuru continues to weave daily and has dedicated himself to teaching the next generation. He has trained over 30 young artisans in his techniques, ensuring that these ancient traditions will continue to flourish.
